RIM announces BlackBerry Bold 9780 with OS 6

Well, there really isn't much to set your blood racing, especially for current Bold 9700 owners who'll feel like they're looking at a twin. However, the new BlackBerry Bold 9780, due out in Asia Pacific before year-end will be the first in the Bold series to run on BlackBerry OS 6, which features a WebKit browser, enhanced multimedia capabilities and universal search.

Design-wise, the 9780 looks exactly like the 9700, aping the same footprint, touch-sensitive trackpad and display. But it does have a higher resolution 5-megapixel camera, twice the built-in memory, and a marginally longer rated standby time. We spotted four key differences between the Bold 9780 and Bold 9700.

Meanwhile, RIM has not named specific OS 6 rollout dates for existing devices, which the company said is subject to carrier certifications. The Waterloo-based phone-maker announced earlier in August that the new operating system will be available for the Bold 9700, Bold 9650,Pearl 3G and future BlackBerry devices.
