Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena

Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena
Phone Arena got their hands on a prototype Nokia E7 and just published their preview. They were thrilled by it’s fantastic design, rock solid construction, and its choice of premium materials. However, they were put off the OS. They felt it was too uninspiring when compared to other modern rivals. There’s a video with the preview for those who don’t like to read.
Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena
I don’t see any of the expected UI updates on the video, so the experience should be very similar to the Nokia N8 (read our review). I kept cringing when Phone Arena said “fixed-focus” camera. Dude, it’s Full-Focus! Nevertheless, 73% of The Nokia Blog readers aren’t excited about this new camera technology either. We want auto-focus in our cameras! On the other hand, the Nokia E7 is targeted towards business users.

Let’s keep in mind that the device in this preview is a prototype. It does not represent the final product. Keep your eyes peeled for our review when we get our hands on the retail version.

We’ll probably even see some product announcements. I just got an overview of Nokia’s activities during the conference so you can prepare for what’s to come.

Android Overtakes Symbian as the World’s Leading Smartphone OS

Android Overtakes Symbian as the World’s Leading Smartphone OS

Google’s Android has overtaken Symbian as the smart phone platform leader according to research firm Canalys. Shipments of Android-based smart phones reached 32.9 million in Q4 2010, while devices running Nokia’s Symbian platform trailed slightly at 31.0 million worldwide. While this is certainly bad news, Nokia remains the leading vendor. This reports tells us the total shipments of Android devices from LG, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, and others combined just slightly beat Nokia.

Notice that Nokia’s market share dropped from 44% in 2009 to 31% in 2010. That’s a steep decline that is unprecedented according to analyst Tomi Ahonen. If you’re interested in getting deeper into this topic, read Tomi’s (very long) article on why Nokia’s market share took a dive.
New Nokia CEO Stephen Elop tweeted a few days ago that, “It’s time for Nokia to change faster.” A number of analysts and bloggers translated this into, “Nokia needs to go Android or Windows Phone 7.” This will be clearer when Elop presents to shareholders at Capital Markets Day on February 11th.

Windows Phone Fans Prefer Nokia Lumia 800 Over HTC Titan and Samsung Focus S

Nokia lumiaWindows Phone Fans Prefer Nokia Lumia 800 Over HTC Titan and Samsung Focus S

Poll HTC Titan vs Samsung Focus S vs Nokia Lumia 800After over 2,000 votes, a recent poll shows Windows Phone fans would buy the Nokia Lumia 800 instead of the HTC Titan or the Samsung Focus S. These are the top-tier Windows Phone devices that will be available this holiday season. Which phone is for you?
Here are the results after 2,362 votes.

The poll is still open. Head over to WMPowerUser to add your response.
The Nokia Lumia 800 was announced at Nokia World last week. It features a 3.7-inch AMOLED Clearblack display, 1.4GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and 8MP Carl Zeiss camera inside a beautiful polycarbonate unibody. Nokia Drive, Nokia Music, ESPN sports hub, and other apps will be exclusive to Nokia’s Windows Phone experience.
Out of the three devices, the Nokia Lumia 800 has the smallest battery at 1450mAh. The Lumia 800 is also the thickest at 12.1mm. It also does not have a front facing camera.
The good news is that the Nokia Lumia 800 has the lowest suggested retail price of the three devices.
Are you tempted by the HTC Titan or the Samsung Focus S?

Nokia Ace 900 Spotted at London Design Museum?

Nokia Ace 900 Spotted at London Design Museum?
Nokia Ace maybe

A photo of an unreleased Nokia Windows Phone showed up at Nokia UK’s Facebook page. Is that the Nokia Ace or the Nokia 900? Maybe Nokia Ace 900? It could be just a generic render, but I thought you might want to take look. The photo was taken from the London Design Museum where Nokia currently has an exhibition.

Click on the photo to head over to Nokia UK’s Facebook photo page.
Let’s analyze this photo for a bit. The screen seems bigger than the Nokia Lumia 800. I’m guessing at least 4 inches. The whole front of the device seems to be covered by glass. The device in photo looks slim, too. Overall, it looks like a a slimmer version of the Nokia Lumia 800 with a bigger display. We’ll keep this photo in mind and compare it to the Nokia Ace or 900 when it gets officially announced. We’re not sure when that’ll happen. CES in Las Vegas is a good guess.

We previously had an anonymous tip about the Nokia Ace or 900 the night before Nokia World. The device in question was not announced at Nokia World. I can’t verify if the tip was real because I haven’t heard from this person before. The Nokia Ace 900 allegedly features Windows Phone 7.5, 1.4GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 32 GB inbuilt memory, Bluetooth 4.0, and 1800 mAh battery.

If you want to see the photographed display in person, head over to theDesign Museum in London by November 2nd. Nokia Design’s exhibit is called, ‘People Made – Nokia products that changed the world.’ Here’s avideo trailer. It’s free to the public and brings the compelling inside story of Nokia design — past, present and future.

Nokia Rolls Out Free Wi-Fi in London

Nokia Rolls Out Free Wi-Fi in London

Nokia free wifiNokia and Spectrum Interactive announced this morning that they started rolling out free Wi-Fi access in Central London. There are 26 hotspots so far that will let anyone with a tablet, laptop, or phone get online for free. The hotspots are located in phone boxes.
User access is unrestricted, but they will be required to agree to terms and conditions. No personal details are needed to register.
Each hotspot is capable of 20Mbps, but no users will get more than 1Mbps download and 0.5Mbps upload. This ensures the network does not get overloaded. Anyone within 50-100 metres should be able to get online.
Internet access is initially available from today (1 November) until the end of 2011. The trial will check users’ browsing behavior and demand or the service. If the trial is successful, Nokia and Spectrum Interactive plan for a large-scale rollout across London from early 2012. The full service would involve using many more of its 1,000 sites in London. Nokia did not say how much the project would cost.

The 26 hotspots can be found in the following locations:
Oxford St, Tottenham Court Road, Bloomsbury, South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Mayfair, Lancaster Gate, Bayswater, Westminster, Sloane Square, Victoria, Marylebone
To publicize the service further, Nokia and Windows Phone smartphone users will be able to find hotspot locations using its Maps application. Nokia hopes this trial will connect people even more easily than ever before.
This would have been really useful for me last week since I did not have a working SIM card when I arrived in London for Nokia World. On the other hand, it wasn’t hard to find free Wi-Fi in London. Starbucks and other businesses let their customers use Wi-Fi without extra charge.

C2-00 - X1-01 Nokia Dual Sim Mobile Phones now available in Pakistan | Mobile Prices In Pakistan

Nokia announces the launch of first two of its Dual SIM phones Nokia C2-00 and Nokia X1-01 in Pakistan, at a press briefing held at a local hotel in Karachi.

The Dual SIM range from Nokia offers a variety of high-demand features at reasonable prices.

Both models offer the most convenient and intuitive experience available for switching between SIM cards – without compromising on features and fun.

Nokia hopes that its Dual SIM range with competitive features would help the company maintain its leadership position in emerging markets like Pakistan.

As Nokia adds phones with more attractive features to its device range, it aims to connect the next billion to the power of mobile communications.

Nokia would also like to enable internet on its low-cost mobile phones such as these to help more people enjoy their first-internet experience on their mobile phone.

The company is already considering partnership with local operators to help end consumers benefit from affordable internet data bundles.

Talking about the two new Dual SIM phones from Nokia, Haseeb Ihtisham, Head of Marketing, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan said,

“The Nokia X1-01 and Nokia C2-00 are high-quality budget phones that come with more memory, better battery life and streamlined SIM change option coupled with more entertainment features than any other Dual SIM phone currently available in the market.” He added, “Although Nokia doesn’t have the first mover advantage when it comes to Dual SIM phones, we wanted to make sure that when we launch our first Dual SIM phone in the market, it is worth its while.”

Nokia c2-00
The Nokia C2-00 is the first Dual SIM phone to have Easy Swap, which offers you the convenience of changing SIM cards without the need to turn off the phone or remove the battery. Just open the SIM door at the side of the phone and swap your SIMs. It’s as easy as that! No more waiting for the phone to reboot. With the Nokia C2-00 you can also browse the internet, read emails and enjoy instant messaging with either SIM card. Not only is the internet browsing experience far superior than that available on competing Dual SIM products, but so too is the memory support. At a whopping 32 GB, the Nokia C2-00 lets you keep thousands of photos, videos and music files with you all the time.

Nokia x1-01 Dual Sim Pakistan
With the Nokia X1-01 you can give each SIM card its own logo, music signature or ringtone – personalization features that you can only get from Nokia! The phone also offers what is simply the best Dual SIM music experience on the market.

You can store and shuffle THOUSANDS of songs with up to 16 GB of memory support, create your own favorite playlists, and play your music back over a loudspeaker that is the loudest and clearest ever produced by Nokia.

The phone also features dedicated music side keys and a battery that will last for up to 36 hours of continued music playback!

Commenting on Nokia’s commitment to Pakistani market, Reza Burney, Country Care Manager said
“Nokia has always disapproved import of mobile phones with duplicate IMEI numbers as well as phones without original Nokia warranty on all platforms. We care about Pakistani consumers as well as the economy, it is for this reason that we endorse availability of only high-quality and reliable mobile phones in Pakistani market brought into country via authorized channels only. We applaud the initiative taken by PTA and government to address this issue because it would not only help the national kitty save on evaded import taxes but also help ascertain a more secure economic environment. All Nokia phones offer the satisfaction of Nokia’s brand reliability, resale value, after-sales service and Nokia Pakistan warranty. The fact that Nokia phones are covered by a comprehensive one year warranty plan via Nokia’s country-wide Care network makes it convenient and more enjoyable for the consumers.”
Price:
The Nokia X1-01 and Nokia C2-00 is now available in Pakistan in the approximate price range of PKR 3100/- to PKR 3400/- and PKR 5200/- to PKR 5500/- respectively.

The availability of these branded Dual SIM phones is likely to give a tough time to low-cost Chinese brands whose claim to fame has been multiple SIM phones sans quality.
