A user on the maemo.org forums recently spotted a newspaper clipping advertising, of all things, “free voice-guided navigation for Nokia N900, E72, X6, N97. FOREVER!” (emphasis mine) Was it real, fake, or just mistaken?
Here’s a larger pic:
Let’s take a look at the evidence:
For
* PR1.2 isn’t out yet, and we’ve heard there’s at least a couple improvements to Ovi Maps coming. Maps has undoubtedly been one of the N900’s weakest links, and .
* This image from Nokiausa.com, which is pretty similar:
Against
* The ad doesn’t say that voice-guided navigation is coming – it implies that it’s already here. Which we know in the case of the N97, X6, and E72 – but not the N900.
* While the ad is pushing three Nokia phones, it looks as if it was paid for by “ParktelUSA”, an authorized distributor. Would a distributor really know what was coming in a future Maemo update?
* It was pulled from a section of The Onion. Just sayin’.
Looks like against wins this round, despite its similarity to one of Nokia’s own website ads. In my mind it’s doubtful that the ad in question is leaking or confirming new information about the N900. Screw-up by the distributor? Possibly.
But the funny part is that I expect to see free voice-guided navigation for the N900 in the future – just not the near future.
