Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena

Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena
Phone Arena got their hands on a prototype Nokia E7 and just published their preview. They were thrilled by it’s fantastic design, rock solid construction, and its choice of premium materials. However, they were put off the OS. They felt it was too uninspiring when compared to other modern rivals. There’s a video with the preview for those who don’t like to read.
Nokia E7 Preview by Phone Arena
I don’t see any of the expected UI updates on the video, so the experience should be very similar to the Nokia N8 (read our review). I kept cringing when Phone Arena said “fixed-focus” camera. Dude, it’s Full-Focus! Nevertheless, 73% of The Nokia Blog readers aren’t excited about this new camera technology either. We want auto-focus in our cameras! On the other hand, the Nokia E7 is targeted towards business users.

Let’s keep in mind that the device in this preview is a prototype. It does not represent the final product. Keep your eyes peeled for our review when we get our hands on the retail version.

Android Overtakes Symbian as the World’s Leading Smartphone OS

Android Overtakes Symbian as the World’s Leading Smartphone OS

Google’s Android has overtaken Symbian as the smart phone platform leader according to research firm Canalys. Shipments of Android-based smart phones reached 32.9 million in Q4 2010, while devices running Nokia’s Symbian platform trailed slightly at 31.0 million worldwide. While this is certainly bad news, Nokia remains the leading vendor. This reports tells us the total shipments of Android devices from LG, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, and others combined just slightly beat Nokia.

Notice that Nokia’s market share dropped from 44% in 2009 to 31% in 2010. That’s a steep decline that is unprecedented according to analyst Tomi Ahonen. If you’re interested in getting deeper into this topic, read Tomi’s (very long) article on why Nokia’s market share took a dive.
New Nokia CEO Stephen Elop tweeted a few days ago that, “It’s time for Nokia to change faster.” A number of analysts and bloggers translated this into, “Nokia needs to go Android or Windows Phone 7.” This will be clearer when Elop presents to shareholders at Capital Markets Day on February 11th.
